Widnes is a town located in the Halton unitary authority of Lancashire, England. It is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey at its lowest bridging point, on the southern periphery of the Liverpool metropolitan region. The modern town resulted from 19th-century industrial expansion and is now a principal centre of Britain's chemical industry--this largely due to proximity to Cheshire salt fields and Lancashire coalfields.
